THE PROJECT PARTNERS

The running of the Observatory is managed by a board of made up of representatives from the North Pennines AONB Partnership, Allenheads Contemporary Arts, Allen Valleys Enterprise Limited and the North Pennines Astronomy Society.



The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of England’s most special places – a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive birds, animals and plants and much, much more. It has also been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark – highlighting its globally important Earth heritage. The North Pennines AONB Partnership is made up of statutory agencies, local authorities and voluntary/community organisations which all have an interest in, and help care for, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and UNESCO Global Geopark. Established in 1994 by Alan Smith and Helen Ratcliffe ACA works from an old Victorian Schoolhouse situated on a steep hill overlooking the village of Allenheads in Northumberland. For 20+ years Allenheads Contemporary Arts have designed and delivered innovative contemporary arts projects that often fall across diverse specialist subjects, working with experts from Universities and commercial industries. As supervisor of the student design competition to create the North Pennines Observstory, Xsite architecture's  experience ranges from sensitive interventions in listed buildings to masterplanning and regeneration, from artist collaborations to delivering BREEAM Excellent rated buildings and Award winning Architecture. Allen Valleys Enterprise Ltd (AVEL) is a Community Benefit Society set up as part of the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme in order to support and deliver new projects that will safeguard its legacy and allow any income to be used for the benefit of the local community. AVEL’s objective is to help to bring long-term prosperity to the Allen Valleys through sustainable, responsibly managed, projects.
