YOUR OWN PURPOSE-BUILT WINDOW ON THE UNIVERSE
This event is part of the second annual North Pennines Stargazing Festival running between 20 Oct-04 Nov 2018, during Half-Term. Organised by the North Pennines AONB Partnership and supported by: Durham County Council; Northumberland County Council and Visit County Durham, the 2018 Stargazing Festival will take advantage of the area's stunning dark skyscape with 30 events over the two weeks unlocking the wonders of the night sky. If you are an existing Supporting Members of North Pennines Observatory you can enjoy discounted ticket prices for some paid-for events during the festival.
Does ET really exist? Is there intelligent life out there and if so how will we ever get in contact? Join astronomer Richard Darn on a colourful trip through the cosmos to find answers to this time-less conundrum.
We will discover how other planets have been detected around distant stars that might harbour life and how scientists have not yet given up of finding other organisms in our very own solar system on exotic worlds such Europa, one of Jupiter’s icy moons. Perhaps life is very rare and we are an amazing fluke of nature!
After looking at both sides of the argument we will (weather permitting) enjoy stunning views of the starry night sky with powerful telescopes and binoculars. Wrap up warm and bring a red light torch (if you have one). The evening is perfect for novices and children over eight years old.
